Laundry Room Storage Solutions That Make Chores Easier
The laundry room is one of the hardest-working spaces in most homes and one of the least planned. Homeowners invest real thought into kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces, then treat the laundry room as whatever is left over.
The result is a room that technically functions but constantly feels like it’s working against you: no counter space to fold, detergent bottles wedged on top of the dryer, clean clothes sitting in a basket somewhere between “done” and “actually put away.”
The good news is that this room responds well to thoughtful storage. You don’t need a large space to make laundry feel manageable. You need the right storage for the way you actually use the room.
Here are some laundry room storage solutions worth considering, from simple additions to a fully custom setup.
Start With Shelving Above the Machines
If your laundry room has nothing above the washer and dryer, that wall space is going to waste. A shelf at the right height gives you an immediate, dedicated place for detergent, dryer sheets, stain remover, and the other supplies you reach for every single load.
The key is getting the depth and placement right. Too shallow and bottles tip over. Too low and loading the machines gets awkward. A shelf depth of 12 to 16 inches typically works well for standard laundry supplies, and positioning it about 18 inches above the machine4s gives you comfortable clearance.
For larger households with a lot of products, a two-shelf setup is worth considering. Use the lower shelf for daily items and the upper shelf for backup stock, seasonal supplies, or things you reach for less often. It keeps the countertop clear and everything within arm’s reach when you need it.
Add Cabinetry to Keep the Room Looking Clean
Open shelving works, but cabinetry takes the room a step further. Upper cabinets offer the same storage capacity with doors that hide everything away. The room looks tidier even when it’s actively in use.
Lower cabinetry is also worth considering, especially if your machines sit on pedestals or if there’s a gap between the machines and the wall. That floor-level space often goes entirely unused, and it can hold quite a bit: cleaning supplies, extra hangers, dryer balls, small storage bins.
Custom cabinetry lets you design around your specific machines and room dimensions rather than working around stock sizes that almost fit. Soft-close doors and drawer configurations make the space feel finished without adding significantly to the cost.
Build In a Folding Station
This one makes a bigger difference than most homeowners expect. A dedicated surface for folding changes the rhythm of doing laundry. Instead of carrying everything to a bed or table in another room, you fold right where the clothes come out.
For front-loading machines, a counter that spans both units is a natural fit. It gives you a wide, flat surface at a comfortable working height and pulls the whole setup together visually. For top-loaders, a surface on an adjacent wall or along a counter run on one side of the room works just as well.
If you want more flexibility, a pull-out shelf that slides under a cabinet gives you folding space when you need it and tucks out of the way when you don’t. That option is particularly useful in smaller laundry rooms where every inch of floor space counts.
Plan for Sorting With Built-In Hamper Storage
One of the most common laundry frustrations is sorting. Clothes pile up in one spot until there’s enough for a load, and by then the pile has spread across the floor. Built-in hamper storage solves this before the mess starts.
Pull-out hamper drawers fit neatly into a lower cabinet run and can be divided into two or three sections for sorting lights, darks, and delicates separately. You sort as you go, and when a section is full, that load is ready. It removes a small but persistent decision from your routine.
Freestanding hampers do the job, but they tend to slide around, tip over, and eat up more floor space than they need to. A built-in option keeps everything anchored and organized without sacrificing room to move.
Make the Most of a Small Laundry Room
Not every laundry room has square footage to spare. Some are barely wider than the machines themselves. In those cases, vertical space becomes your most valuable asset.
Tall cabinet towers on either side of the machines can hold a significant amount of storage without extending into the room at all. Wall-mounted drying racks that fold flat when not in use are a practical option for rooms where floor space is limited. Pegboards and wall-mounted hooks on open wall sections can also add useful storage without claiming any floor space.
The most common mistake in small laundry rooms is trying to make off-the-shelf solutions work in a space they were not designed for. A custom approach means working with the actual dimensions of your room, not around them.
